  1. NORTHWEST: CLIMATE AND WEATHER

  3. The flat, treeless plain bordering the Bering Sea north
  4. of the Alaska Peninsula and continuing northward to
  5. Point Hope on the Chukchi Sea has a climate controlled
  6. by the nearness of open ocean. This means cool summers,
  7. with considerable cloudiness, fog, and drizzle near the
  8. coast. As you move inland, winters tend to be long and
  9. severe, while summers are short and intense. Despite
  10. extensive overcast, precipitation is light. Summer
  11. showers (usually in August) bring the most precipita-
  12. tion. Snow, sometimes wet and heavy, falls from late
  13. September to May. Winds blow moderately and steadily
  14. along the coast, frequently reaching gale force. Temp-
  15. eratures in the summer can be in the 80's (F.), while
  16. winter temperatures dip as low as -50 degrees F.
